Recently we received my oldest son’s writing samples- various snippets that he has put together over the past month or so.  One really stood out to us, both my wife and I found it amazing and precious at the same time.  The topic was change and he wrote the following:

There was an experience of change with me when I got a brother.  That means I always have company.  I have so much fun with him.  He is my best friend.  We are mean to each other sometimes.  We never get in trouble.  So when I got a brother things really changed.  I like that things really changed a lot.

I think this can be listed as a definition of brotherhood, especially the “mean … sometimes” part.  And now it is documented for all time, although I will save reminding him of it until absolutely needed.  Perhaps when one of them is speaking at the other’s wedding we can pull it out.
